00 - Preface

AKAINOID is meant to become a complete editor/libraian for the Akai S3000XL sampler (if not more models of the AKAI S series) including key-mapping and graphical envelopes.

This beta release is already a tool for managing and transferring samples from the Atari ST to the S3000XL as well as the opposite route from the Akai to the Atari via MIDI following the Sample Dump Standard (SDS). This version also includes the Program Mode part of AKAINOID as far as I have come coding. Program Mode might still be buggy here and there but I'm quite confident Sample Mode will run smoothly.

AKAINOID makes use of Steinberg's MROS software development kit, so it can access additional MIDI ports there are MROS drivers for (e.g. Steinberg MIDEX+). The MIDI System Exclusive commands of the S3000XL build upon the Akai S1000 SysEx protocol. So far only S1000 SysEx was used, so the application should work for earlier Akai samplers, too - at least at this stage of development.

AKAINOID was coded and tested on both an Atari MegaSTe as well as an Atari 1040STe (both 4MB of RAM) running TOS2.06 and NVDI5.03 on top of it speeding up the graphical output.

AKAINOID also runs on a virtual Atari ST in Microsoft Windows 11 emulated by Hatari v2.5.0, the first version of the Hatari emulator with native MIDI support in Microsoft Windows. AKAINOID was also successfully tested on Hatari in a current version of Ubuntu Studio (Linux).
An emulated Atari may easily be equipped with 14MB of RAM - the theoretical maximum of RAM on the Atari ST, so longer samples can be loaded to memory but the transmission of SysEx dumps takes remarkably more time than on original Atari hardware.

Note

Neither this manual nor the application will save you from reading the Akai S3000XL Operator's Manual nor will it replace an in-depth understanding of the sampler and its features.
